The book features a slasher sequence set inside a homemade haunted attraction hidden deep in the Louisiana woods. Slashers are fun any time of year, but there’s something about reading one on a hot, humid summer night that just hits differently. The writing is fast-paced, but manages to capture a sun-soaked nostalgia that will have you craving even more Frendo. Luckily, there are already two more entries into this series (Frendo Livesand TheChurch of Frendo) with a fourth installment (Lights! Camera! Frendo!) releasing in August 2026.

You’re Not Supposed to Die Tonight brings us to Camp Mirror Lake, a fictional summer camp-style attraction that allows visitors to become immersed in a fake summer slasher experience. Sounds amazing, until the fake scares become all too real and a group of teens has to escape a mysterious killer who is hunting them down one by one.

This book is a blast, dropping the reader into an atmospheric setting deep in the woods in the dead of summer with a cast of characters to truly root for. It has tension, twists and a fast-paced plot that delivers everything promised.

It’s a page-turner that is intense, bloody and unrelenting. You will find yourself unable to put this one down.

Set in the ‘80s during a sweltering summer in a small town in Maryland, Richard Chizmar crafts a story that masterfully blends true crime with slasher fiction, leaving the reader feeling completely immersed in what feels like a real serial murder mystery. I found myself genuinely scared of this Boogeyman leaving the bodies of teenage girls around a quiet community. It’s a quiet summer night kind of read that will keep you up until the sun rises.

‘Slasher Summer’ by E.L.Chen

This is the newest entry into my favorite summer slasher reads and it delivers at every turn. Slasher Summer follows a group of seven friends (with real Midnight Society vibes) reuniting in their sleepy, lakeside hometown of Cedar Lake Falls. The reunion takes place at a secluded cabin in the woods that served as the primary filming location for the cult classic horror flick, Slasher. With a setting like that, nothing could go wrong, right? Wrong.

A masked killer crashes their reunion and the campy, slasher energy flows right in with them. It’s fast-paced, tense and includes nods to some of the best slasher films we all know and love. With Slasher Summer, E.L. Chen has made a self-aware homage to the genre that you should read with the light on.

‘FantasticLand’ by Mike Bockoven

As soon as I saw that FantasticLand by Mike Bockoven takes place in an abandoned amusement park, it absolutely hooked me. Taking place after a hurricane traps a group of amusement park employees inside their deserted park, it weaves a tale of human nature gone terribly wrong in the most grotesque ways.

Told through interviews with survivors, it blends psychological horror with survival in a story that’s equal parts Lord of the Flies and perfect summer slasher. This one will have you thinking twice about that carnival ride.
