Anne Hathaway Finally Breaks Silence on Yesteryear Amid Bizarre Backlash

Anne Hathaway has spoken publicly for the first time about her forthcoming adaptation of Caro Claire Burke’s bestselling novel Yesteryear. Her comments have come months after online speculation linked her to the book’s authorship and amid a wider critical divide over the debut.

Hathaway discussed the project at the premiere of The End of Oak Street. She told The Hollywood Reporter she had read a draft of the book two years earlier. “I knew the intense feeling that I had for it, so it’s been really fun watching people discover it,” she said.
“I have friends writing me, they’re like ‘What, how?’” She added that one friend immediately re-read the book and could not recall the last time they had done so. “People are just loving it, and I couldn’t be happier for Caro, what a triumph for her. And now we just have to do the movie justice.”
The actor did not address the online backlash Yesteryear’s been getting. Critics have attacked the book’s satirical ambitions, its reliance on shock value, and its ending. Separately, internet speculation accused Hathaway of ghostwriting the work. That theory gained traction despite no evidence.

Burke dismantled the rumor by referencing a Substack review where the writer admitted they had not read Yesteryear yet remained “pretty certain” Anne Hathaway was the ghostwriter. Burke traced the suspicion back to her acknowledgements page. “I thanked probably 40 people for impacting the book, but in retrospect, I probably wouldn’t do acknowledgements,” she said. “I’ve seen the extent to which people search for Easter eggs there.”
She also explained the sequence of events that fed the conspiracy. Film rights take longer to finalise than book rights. By the time the public learned of Hathaway’s involvement, Burke had already completed the manuscript. “We already had the ending. We already had Natalie,” she stated to The New Yorker. Their conversations had focused on why Hathaway would suit the lead role on screen. “In some ways, she was pitching to me, because there were other people who were vying at the time to have the rights.”
Hathaway produces through Somewhere Pictures and stars as Natalie, a tradwife influencer who wakes up in the 19th century.
