Bob Denver as Gilligan in 'Gilligan's Island'

Bob Denver's widow would like fans to know all the sides of her late husband, not just the bumbling mishaps of his character on Gilligan's Island.

The show, which ran for three seasons from 1964 to 1967, centered around seven castaways who have to survive after getting shipwrecked on an uncharted island. Denver played Gilligan, the clumsy first mate of the S.S. Minnow, who often thwarted the group's escape attempts with his ineptitude.

The actor behind the iconic sitcom character was far from incapable, however, his wife Dreama Denver recently told Woman's World. She said that the Dobie Gillis star was a devoted father to their autistic son and worked hard to learn how to best take care of his child.

"People ask me, ā€˜What was he like at home?’ It’s not like he was falling out of hammocks and getting hit in the head with coconuts," she said. "He was exceptionally intelligent, and people don’t connect that with Gilligan. I didn’t either at first, but he was so well-read and had such a good heart. He loved his boy and loved me.ā€

Some actors feel stuck after their breakthrough roles. Dreama Denver said her husband felt pigeonholed sometimes, saying he often "railed against" getting typecast in hapless buddy roles.

Denver eventually made peace with the fact that people most associated him with Gilligan, finding comfort in the fact that his work brought people joy.

ā€œHe started to realize that this wasn’t just some little show in an 8 o’clock time slot,ā€ Dreama said. ā€œIt really meant something to people. And he started to go, ā€˜It’s not bad to have been part of something that meant this much to people.ā€™ā€
