Dan Levy’s New Netflix Series 'Big Mistakes' Features a Stacked Cast

Have you ever imagined what you’d do if someone tried to blackmail you? For sitcom legend Dan Levy, that’s an anxious rumination he knows all too well. Speaking to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show recently, Levy confessed: “I have an irrational fear of being blackmailed into organized crime. I don’t know why…I wouldn’t do well. So when you’re writing a show, you think about the worst-case scenario you would find yourself in, and it’s this.”
That fear became the seed for Levy’s new Netflix comedy series Big Mistakes, his first as part of an overall deal with the streamer. As he went about assembling a creative team for the show, Levy asked himself who else, like him, might be equally (and hilariously) incapable of handling blackmail? Apparently, the answer came to him immediately: I Love LA creator and actress Rachel Sennott.

Soon, Sennott—who previously worked alongside Levy in HBO’s The Idol—joined the actor in developing Big Mistakes. The two spent six months workshopping the series over Zoom before meeting in person for five intense days, nailing down the pilot in just one.

Ultimately, Big Mistakes finds Levy revisiting the dysfunctional family dynamics he mastered in Schitt’s Creek, but this time with much higher stakes. The action begins when Nicky (Levy) and Morgan (Taylor Ortega) enter a jewelry store to find a gift for their ailing Nonna’s birthday, and Morgan makes the ill-fated, impulsive decision to steal a diamond necklace. Sadly, their Nonna’s dead by the time the siblings arrive with her gift, and the damage is already done: When the shop’s staff discover the theft, the siblings are blackmailed, forced (at gunpoint) into a delivery truck, and pushed into a series of escalating, dangerous assignments.
