Dave Portnoy says Drake Maye 'needs an intervention' after Patriots nightmare

Dave Portnoy continued his latest string of New England sports meltdowns fresh off a dynasty less than a decade ago, but Drake Maye apparently found a new way to terrify him like Tom Brady never did outside of leaving the Patriots for Tampa Bay.

By halftime against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Portnoy was already begging for an intervention as the action played out in London. Maye's year-three regression looked nothing like the MVP runner-up who nearly dragged New England back to Super Bowl glory last year.

The Barstool Sports founder unloaded as his New England Patriots completely spiraled in a 35-6 loss, watching Maye cough up the ball again and again.

"Drake Maye needs an intervention at halftime," Portnoy wrote on X. He complained about missed touchdowns, a dropped ball, and "horrible" interceptions while admitting he was "holding my breath every time he throws the ball."

Portnoy added that Maye did not become "the worst QB in the NFL overnight" and urged him to "keep slinging" until he worked his way out of the slump.

Fans showed zero patience for the Patriots QB and tossed out labels like "inconsistent," "fraud," and the new favorite: "Drake Maybe." The Patriots QB ranks 25th or worse in every major stat, including passing yards, touchdowns, and QBR.

"Drake 'the schedule' Maye is a fraud," one fan wrote. Another argued Maye's problems could have been ironed out in preseason had New England played him more and added, "Huge mistake; this guy needs the snaps to get his ---- together."

One fan joked a sports psychiatrist would need overtime pay to fix this mess. Others started chanting for Tommy DeVito, already calling it "time for Tommy two chains" as Maye's grip on the job slipped.

That prediction became reality later in the afternoon after Maye finished 14 of 25 for 199 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions before DeVito replaced him, with Jacksonville leading 35-6 in the fourth quarter.

Maye also lost a fumble to give him seven turnovers through three games this season. He's completed 51 of 80 passes for 585 yards with one touchdown and six interceptions.

New England is 1-2, and Maye has yet to finish a game this season with more touchdown passes than picks. Next week's schedule doesn't get any easier as the Patriots will travel to Highmark Stadium to face MVP Josh Allen and the 3-0 divisional rival Buffalo Bills.

His performances have been a dramatic reversal from the opening three games of 2025, when he threw five touchdowns against two interceptions while completing more than 72 percent of his passes.
