Elon Musk could soon get a massive $100 billion payday if a giant merger between Tesla and SpaceX actually happens.
Musk's net worth is estimated to be between $923 billion and $985 billion, and another $1B may be pocket change to the tech guru, but even so, it's good to have a buffer.
The merger isn't set in stone, but special board committees have been formed at both companies to evaluate combining the two companies, according to The Guardian.

Regarding the big payout, it all comes down to Musk's contract terms. When big companies merge, it can trigger a special change-in-control rule.
For Musk, this means a massive chunk of Tesla shares would unlock for him early.

At today's stock prices, those shares are worth over $110 billion. It would be the biggest single-day payday in history.
The electric car company has had a rough year because cheaper electric cars from China are stealing its customers. But just talking about the SpaceX merger has already helped save Tesla's stock from dropping further.
On top of that, Tesla just reported its latest financial results, beating expectations and showing the company is still generating massive profits despite the pressure.

Musk told investors that dealing with the legal rules for this merger feels like "tap dancing through a minefield." To actually make the merger happen, Musk needs a "Yes" vote from Tesla stockholders, and many of them are worried about the risks.

Critics have several major concerns about the deal. Because Musk runs both companies, they worry about a conflict of interest, fearing he might basically be negotiating with himself.
Regular investors are also worried that creating a large number of new shares to pay for the merger will make their existing shares less valuable.
Finally, experts worry this gives Musk unchecked power and distracts Tesla from fixing its current issues, like delayed Robotaxis
Musk is pushing for the merger to turn Tesla into more than just a car company. He wants it to focus on sci-fi tech like self-driving Robotaxis and his Optimus humanoid robots.
To demonstrate how the two companies can work together, Musk recently unveiled a $200,000 "Roadster 2" sports car prototype at a SpaceX facility in Texas. The car used actual rocket thrusters to lift off the ground and hover.
If the deal goes through, it will kick off a massive corporate restructuring that will completely change the game for both companies.
