Maggie Smith would have been 91 on Sunday, Dec. 28 and fans all over the globe are paying tribute to the iconic actress, one year after her death.
The Harry Potter star is being remembered today by dozens of people on social media.
"Still gone too soon. Miss you, legend," one person wrote on X in response to a post about Smith's birthday shared by PopCrave.
"Aye, a proper legend she was—talent and wit in spades. Let's raise a cuppa to her unforgettable roles and that cheeky smile," someone else said.
"Happy birthday legend," a third comment read.
"She gave us 89 years of absolute mastery… and still managed to leave before we were emotionally ready to type ‘the late’ in front of her name," a fourth X user added.
Smith died in September 2024, just three months shy of her 90th birthday. Smith had ongoing health issues, including Graves' disease, which she was diagnosed with in the late '80s.
According to a family statement, Smith died at a London hospital. Her cause of death was never made public. Her sons said that their mother "passed away peacefully," but did not offer any additional details.
"An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother," the statement continued, according to People magazine.
Smith had a very successful career, with iconic roles in Potter and in Downton Abbey.
