The Game of Thrones universe is finally heading to the big screen, with Warner Bros. setting a 2029 release date for Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, the first feature film set in George R R Martin’s Westeros.
Aegon’s Conquest will follow Aegon I Targaryen, better known as Aegon the Conqueror, the first Targaryen king and the founder of the dynasty that goes on to rule much of Westeros for generations.
His two-year campaign, that would bring six of the Seven Kingdoms under his rule, took place around 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, beginning when Aegon arrived in Westeros with his two sister-wives and their three dragons.
The film will also take audiences back to the creation of the iconic Iron Throne, forged by Aegon from the swords of his defeated enemies. The throne would become the defining symbol of power in Westeros, surviving the nearly 300-year Targaryen dynasty and continuing to pass between rival rulers in House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and Game of Thrones.

Aegon’s Conquest will be based on Martin’s Fire & Blood, the Targaryen history that also serves as the source material for House of the Dragon. Written as an in-world history by Archmaester Gyldayn, the book draws on accounts from different Westerosi sources, which sometimes contradict one another.
No cast members have yet been announced, and there is no confirmed production start date yet.
The film will be directed by Owen Harris, who already has a Westerosi credit under his belt after directing three episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The screenplay comes from Beau Willimon, the creator and showrunner of House of Cards who later worked on Andor.

This will be the first Game of Thrones story to make the leap from television to the big screen. The original HBO series ran for eight seasons between 2011 and 2019, before House of the Dragon went back roughly 200 years earlier to tell the story of the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which arrived in 2026, jumped forward again to around a century before Game of Thrones, following the adventures of the hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire, Egg.

HBO has spent years developing potential spin-offs that never reached the screen, including Bloodmoon, a prequel set thousands of years before Game of Thrones that was scrapped, and Flea Bottom, which was abandoned after early development.
A proposed sequel centred on Jon Snow also made it as far as discussions with Kit Harington before the actor confirmed in 2024 that it had been shelved.
Other projects have continued to circle the edges of development, including Ten Thousand Ships, about the legendary warrior queen Nymeria, and Nine Voyages, following the Sea Snake Corlys Velaryon which was later reworked as an animated series because of the cost of recreating its extensive sea voyages.

Martin has been talking about a Game of Thrones movie for more than a decade, and in a 2015 interview with The South Bank Show, he said: “It took Peter Jackson three movies to make Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, and he still had to cut things. It would take three movies for A Storm of Swords alone!”
He calculated that adapting the first half of his series could require seven films, adding: “Nobody’s going to commit to that, and, of course, they didn’t commit to that.”
The same year, he wrote in a blog post that he “love[d] the idea” of ending the series with a feature, asking: “What fantasist would not love the idea of going out with an epic hundred million feature film?” He added: “If we build it, they will come. But will we build it? I have no bloody idea.”
