Rock fans have spent decades turning up the volume on Heart’s biggest hits—and today one of the band’s most influential musicians is celebrating a birthday.
Nancy Wilson, the guitarist and singer who helped power Heart to international success, turns 72 on March 16.
Wilson rose to fame alongside her older sisterAnn Wilson in the 1970s as Heart became one of the first hard rock bands fronted by women to achieve massive commercial success. The group exploded onto the rock scene with their 1975 debut album Dreamboat Annie, which produced classic tracks like "Magic Man" and "Crazy on You."
Just two years later, Heart delivered another defining moment with the song "Barracuda," which became one of the band’s signature hits and a staple of classic rock radio.
Wilson’s guitar work quickly became a defining part of Heart’s sound. Known for blending elements of classical guitar and flamenco technique with hard rock energy, she helped give the band a distinctive style that set them apart from other rock acts of the era.
Heart continued to dominate through the late ’70s and into the ’80s, eventually scoring their first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with the song "These Dreams" in 1986—featuring Nancy Wilson on lead vocals.
Over the decades, the band has sold more than 35 million records worldwide and produced a long list of rock classics, including "Alone," "What About Love," and "Barracuda."

Wilson’s influence as a guitarist has also earned major recognition. In 2016, Gibson ranked her among the greatest female guitarists of all time.
Heart’s legacy was cemented in 2013 when Nancy and Ann Wilson were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Even after more than 50 years in music, Wilson remains active as a performer, songwriter and mentor to younger artists.
In a recent conversation about her musical journey, Wilson reflected on the moment that first inspired her to pick up a guitar.
"When The Beatles showed up, it was like, 'Must have guitar,'" she told Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan.
That spark led to one of the most successful careers in rock history.
And today, fans are celebrating the legendary guitarist who helped shape the sound of classic rock.
