“It Really Doesn’t Work That Way”: Lane Kiffin Warns SEC of Major Eligibility Dilemma Amid Conflicting Court Orders

Lane Kiffin agrees with the SEC that former professional athletes should not be returning to college football. But as the conference moves toward restricting NFL players from rejoining college rosters, the LSU coach believes the issue has become far more complicated because of conflicting court rulings.

On “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday, Kiffin said the current eligibility landscape puts conferences in a difficult legal position after multiple players were granted temporary eligibility through court orders.

Kiffin believes the real problem begins when conferences try to ignore one court ruling while honoring another.

“I think you’re going to get in an interesting situation where, as a conference, you’re saying, ‘We’re going to follow this court order, but these kids that got that other court order, we’re going to say, No, you can’t,” he said. “It really doesn’t work that way. You can’t decide, ‘I like that injunction; I don’t like this one.’”

Kiffin made it clear that he is not a fan of professionals returning to the college game in principle.

“There’s a lot of parts of this I don’t like. I don’t think professionals should come back to college sports and college football.”

However, he argued LSU’s current situation is different because Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris are part of a specific group of athletes who were ruled to have been denied a fifth year of eligibility under the NCAA’s rules.

“These aren’t players who have gone on to play seasons professionally or randomly filed an injunction. This is part of a specific class that was ruled wrong by the NCAA that was supposed to be five-for-five,” Kiffin said.

SEC Releases Official Statement Opposing NFL-To-College Returns

Before Kiffin’s comments on Tuesday, the Southeastern Conference issued aformal statement on Monday nigh following a meeting of its presidents and chancellors.

The conference said college athletics should remain reserved for college athletes and argued that players who sign professional contracts should not be permitted to return to the NCAA.

The statement warned that allowing former professionals back into college football would blur the line between college and pro sports, creating competitive equity issues and reducing opportunities for current college athletes and high school recruits. It also pointed to the Protect College Sports Act as a long-term solution for the growing eligibility confusion.

The announcement to come amid increasing pressure from conferences to respond after courts temporarily restored eligibility for members of the 2022 recruiting class.

While the SEC’s position appears clear, the eligibility fight is far from settled. With multiple lawsuits and appeals still moving through the courts, Kiffin believes conferences could soon find themselves caught between NCAA policy and judicial rulings as the 2026 college football season approaches.
