Jake Cannavale revealed what it’s like working with his dad, Bobby Cannavale, on their Prime Video crime thriller, Scarpetta
Jake plays the younger version of Pete Marino on the show, while Bobby plays the older version of the same character
“It would get really deep and cathartic and philosophical,” Jake said of collaborating with Bobby on the same character
Jake Cannavale and his dad, Bobby Cannavale, are collaborating in a way not many father-son duos ever have.
Speaking with PEOPLE in an exclusive conversation at the premiere of Prime Video’s Scarpetta in New York City on March 3, the 30-year-old actor revealed what it’s like working with his dad on the new crime thriller.
Bobby, 55, plays former detective Pete Marino in the show, while Jake plays a younger version of the same character in flashbacks. Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman stars as forensic pathologist Dr. Kay Scarpetta.
"The preparation was, honestly, it was pretty cerebral," Jake said. "We worked together 15 years ago playing father and son, and all of our scenes were together, but this time we don't have any scenes together."

While they appeared together in Nurse Jackie previously, Jake explained that he worked with his dad on “excavating this character” this time.
"It would get really deep and cathartic and philosophical, and sometimes we'd just be laughing our ass off like we were at a bar or something," Jake added. "So, you know, we got a whole spectrum of collaboration, which is really awesome to see my dad in that light."
Jake also said that the experience brought them closer together.

"There's this very sort of, dare I say, mature understanding that happens as the son of anybody when you realize what your parent does to feel this sense of purpose," Jake said.
Jake continued, "My dad was an actor before he was a dad, and he'll always be both of those things, but really seeing the thing that gave him drive in this life now as a young man and not just his son was really cool and really humbling and definitely enhanced our relationship and made me a better artist, I'd say.”
Jake previously joined Bobby — who shares his son with ex-wife Jenny Lumet — at the opening night of Art on Broadway in September.

Bobby has been dating actress Rose Byrne, 46, since meeting in 2012. They have welcomed sons Rafael, 8, and Rocco, 10.
Scarpetta premieres on Prime Video on Wednesday, March 11.
