Jennifer Holland Calls Husband James Gunn a 'Workaholic' as He Films “Superman” Sequel Post-“Supergirl” Premiere (Exclusive)

Jennifer Holland tells PEOPLE that her husband James Gunn returned to working on the Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow after the couple attended Supergirl's premiere in New York City on Monday, June 22

Holland, 38, and Gunn, 59, began dating in 2015 and married in 2022

Supergirl is in theaters now, while Man of Tomorrow releases July 9, 2027

James Gunn darted off to return to production on the in-the-works sequel to Supermanfollowing Supergirl's recent premiere in New York City, as his wife Jennifer Holland says.

Holland, 38, caught up with PEOPLE at a special screening of Supergirl — the second movie in the DC Universe that Gunn, 59, is in charge of — at New York City's Rooftop Cinema Club as the movie hit theaters on Thursday, June 25.

"He did not," Holland says, when asked if she and Gunn spent any downtime in the city after attending the Supergirl premiere on Monday, June 22. "He went home directly after the premiere to go film again, because he's just—he loves it. He's a workaholic, so it's his favorite. He's like, 'Oh, gosh, life is so hard. I'm working all the time,' and then he gets one day off, and he's like, 'I don't know what to do with myself. I don't know what to do with myself.' So, you know, he's happy working."

Gunn kickstarted his DC Universe with last year's Superman reboot, which introduced David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Milly Alcock as his superpowered cousin Kara Zor-El. Supergirl takes audiences off Earth as Kara Zor-El parties her way through space in celebration of her 23rd birthday, meets Jason Momoa's character Lobo and further comes to terms with her identity as a superhero. Corenswet, 32, reprises his role as Superman in the movie, and both actors are expected to appear in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow, a continuation of Superman's story that will release in July 2027. (Craig Gillespie directed Supergirl; Gunn is writing and directing Man of Tomorrow.)

While Gunn returned to work on that movie, Holland — an actor who has been married to Gunn since 2022 — tells PEOPLE she has spent "some good time with my friends in New York" in recent days. "I was here with my friend Bonnie, and [actor] María Gabriela de Faría, who plays, The Engineer in Superman," she adds. "She came to New York with me, and I got to show her around a little bit. She's never been to New York, so it was her first time."

Holland also has a role in Gunn's cinematic superhero universe. She plays a key part in HBO Max's Peacemaker series, which stars John Cena as the title character first introduced in Gunn's 2021 movie The Suicide Squad. Holland began acting for the screen in the early 2000s and has also appeared in past DC movies like Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which Gunn also directed.

"I could definitely see that happening," she tells PEOPLE, when asked if she may appear in a future Superman or Supergirl entry as her Peacemaker character Emilia Harcourt. "Obviously, I don't know. I know as much as everyone else knows about where we're gonna see Harcourt again. But I am keeping my arms as toned as possible in the off time, just in case, so that they're ready for me."

Gunn first revealed that the follow-up to Superman will be titled Man of Tomorrow back in September 2025. The movie will reunite Corenswet with his onscreen nemesis with Nicholas Hoult, who portrayed the villain Lex Luthor in Superman. The filmmaker shared a behind-the-scenes look at Man of Tomorrow's production as recently as June 1, when he posted a photo of Hoult, 36, wearing a high-tech green suit of armor on the movie's set to Instagram.

Supergirl is in theaters now. Man of Tomorrow is expected in theaters July 9, 2027, while another movie in the DC Universe, Clayface, will be in theaters Oct. 23.
