Jim Nantz broke his silence on Tony Romo’s exit from CBS Sports following his July 23 OWI arrest

Nantz said he and Romo will “be friends forever” after sharing nine years in the broadcast booth together

“My first thought, of course, was to see how Tony was doing, just as a friend to make sure he’s doing alright, and I feel good about that right now,” Nantz said of learning of Romo’s exit

Jim Nantz has broken his silence on his longtime broadcast partner Tony Romo’s exit from CBS Sports.

The network confirmed to PEOPLE they “mutually agreed to part ways” with Romo, 46, on Oct. 2, months after the former quarterback was put on indefinite leave following his July 23 arrest on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Milwaukee.

In an interview with Traina Thoughtshost Jimmy Traina published on Wednesday, Oct. 14, Nantz, 67, said he and Romo continue to share a great friendship and reflected on the end of an era. “We started in 2017, we did nine years together. We did three Super Bowls,” Nantz began, recalling that he learned of Romo’s arrest while he was on site at a golf event in Minnesota.

Nantz, who said during the interview that he had “no role” in the network’s decision to part ways with Romo, said he and his former partner shared a “ton of laughs” during their years as broadcast partners. “We had an enjoyable ride. We really did,” Nantz said.

“It’s a forever relationship,” he replied when Traina asked if he and Romo are still friends. “It was a great friendship before we got started as teammates on the air,” Nantz said, adding, “We’ll be friends forever. Nothing changes.”

In a statement following his exit from the network, Romo said he’s “going to use this time to take a break, something I’ve never done before, and focus on my health and my family before moving on to my next opportunity.”

Nantz told Traina that he was in Las Vegas for the Raiders’ game against the Chiefs when the network announced his partner’s exit. “My first thought, of course, was to see how Tony was doing, just as a friend to make sure he’s doing alright, and I feel good about that right now,” Nantz said, commending Romo for being “very open-hearted” in his Oct. 2 statement.

“I know the support system he has at home, and I look forward to Tony coming through this, and he will,” Nantz added.

Traina followed up that comment by asking if he thinks Romo will “work again,” to which Nantz replied, “I think unquestionably, he will work again.”

The analyst said he’s not sure if Romo’s future is in “calling games or in the studio,” before praising his former partner. “He’s got a lot of talent, he’s got a lot of people that like him,” Nantz continued. “He’s a star. He’s got a personality that is just, it’s different, and thats a good thing. He’s a bigger-than-life personality.”

Nantz clarified that he does “not know where Tony’s head is on that right now, so I’m not going to speculate,” regarding a future job.
