Jodeci Recalls the One Way Their Record Company Underestimated Them on Their Debut Album “Forever My Lady” (Exclusive)

Jodeci released their first album, Forever My Lady, in 1991

Dalvin and K-Ci caught up with PEOPLE to share memories of making their debut and their upcoming anniversary tour

To celebrate Forever My Lady‘s 35th anniversary, the R&B group will tour the U.S. from October to December

Jodeci was excited to get into the studio to make their first album.

Members Dalvin DeGrate and K-Ci looked back on the process of creating their debut album, Forever My Lady, in a recent chat with PEOPLE ahead of the R&B group’s tour for the album’s 35th anniversary.

“I remember that our record company didn’t realize that we could go in the studio and make a record on our own because we were so young,” Dalvin tells PEOPLE.

“I guess it was the only act that we really could go in the studio and know our way around the studio. So we just went in the studio and did what we know how to do, and we was having fun,” he continues. “Al B. Sure came in and gave a little bit of pointers and stuff here and there, but we was having fun.”

K-Ci recalls, “A lot of those songs were already recorded before we left Charlotte to get a record deal. So when we got to New York, all we had to do, Dre just wanted to touch some things up. And that’s when he brought Al to do some little things. We had the picture already. Dray done just put it in the frame, pretty much.”

Dalvin believes the same background that filled everyone with the belief the group could be a major success was also why they were so surprised by their recording capabilities.

“Everybody was shocked that we, being teenagers, could go in the studio and just make records. Because K-Ci and JoJo had come from gospel and me and Devonte came from gospel, and we’ve been recording albums our whole lives, since we were young. So I think they were more amazed that we could go in the studio and make a record,” he says.

This fall, Jodeci will hit the road to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Forever My Lady with the fans who embraced their sound and style. The tour kicks off Saturday, Oct. 24 in San Francisco and runs through Saturday, Dec. 19.

The pair is excited to get back out there.

“Being out there with the fans and performing, that’s our thing right there. Getting to see our fans and people that’s been loving us and even people that don’t even know Jodeci, just coming out, just hanging out to see what that’s all about, is a good time,” K-Ci says.
