Key Takeaways

Melissa Joan Hart celebrated her 50th birthday with a casual weekend gathering in Lake Tahoe with loved ones

The festivities included bowling, a beach party with live music, and river tubing despite weather changes altering plans

Hart credits a healthier lifestyle with helping her feel stronger and ready to tackle her bucket list adventures

When it came time to celebrating her milestone 50th birthday, actress Melissa Joan Hart knew exactly what to do.

“I've been wanting to throw a party in Lake Tahoe for 20 years and finally found the perfect excuse to gather my favorite people in my favorite place,” she tells PEOPLE exclusively.

Though her actual birthday was in April, Hart brought together family and friends in late June for a festivity-filled weekend. “Simplicity was the goal this time,” she says. “No fancy parties or themes. I just wanted to spend quality time on the lake. Flip-flops and friends.”

On Friday, June 26, the group met for bowling at Bowl Incline and dined on a poké station and cannoli from Azzara’s. While the weather ruled out their scheduled pontoon boats with slides from Tahoe Sports Ski Run Boat Co., Hart and her guests enjoyed a beach party beginning at sunset with Mofo’s pizza, cake and live music. On Sunday, they all went river tubing with Truckee River Rafting.

“I always say I would be a party planner if I wasn't at actor so it was all my favorite spots and foods with all my favorite people,” Hart says of the itinerary. “My love language is quality time, so I just wanted to laugh and be present with my friends and family.”

As for turning 50, Hart is taking it all in stride. “I honestly feel stronger than ever. In the past few years, I've put a huge focus on my health and longevity,” she says. “The mid 40's hit me hard with some aches and pains and I realized I didn't want to give in to that for the rest of my life.”

The actress and her husband, musician Mark Wilkerson, whom she married in 2003 and shares sons Mason, Braydon, and Tucker, “went on a clean path of eating which included lowering sugar, reducing flour intake, 14-hour fasting and working out daily at his gym, Body Fit Training,” she adds. “We now have a different lifestyle that has us feeling pretty invincible, honestly. I'm ready to take on the next 50!

Looking ahead, Hart has a few more things to check off on her bucket list. “I know it sounds boring but as we grow older, I really believe good health is everything,” she says. “I want to snowboard in the Alps, wake board in the South Pacific and everything in between. Feeling good and moving well is the goal for the next 50 years.”
