Michael B. Jordan tells PEOPLE his mom was most excited to meet Laurence Fishburne of any celebrity at a Hollywood event

Michael B. Jordan's mom Donna met Laurence Fishburne, and the star says she got pretty excited.

The Oscar nominee, 39, caught up with PEOPLE on the red carpet at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Thursday, Feb. 12, as he received the festival's Outstanding Performer of the Year award for Sinners.

Jordan's mom and his siblings Jamila and Khalid were also in attendance, as the actor said that Fishburne, 54, "is probably somebody" whom his mother has been particularly happy to meet.

"Yeah, that's it. My mom probably tripped out a little bit over Laurence Fishburne," Jordan says.

Jordan said during the event that his father, Michael, did not appear with the rest of his family because he is currently traveling overseas.

"Without them I wouldn't be here," he says of his family's support over the years. "I mean, literally a lot of people say that, but if it wasn't for my mom, I wouldn't be in the industry. I wouldn't have been on this path. So to have the most success, the highest, I guess, I've been in so far in my career, to have my family with me at these events means a lot to me."

Donna told Vanity Fair in a 2018 cover story about her son that Michael, then 11, began acting when a receptionist at her doctor's office suggested he pursue modeling.

“I was just at the time thinking about college tuition and that sort of thing,” she said. “Little did I know that it was going to be job, after job, after job, after job.”

In Santa Barbara, Michael tells PEOPLE that Donna is "glowing" as she attends events this awards season.

"I think to have, I don't know, a moment to share some of this excitement, this adrenaline, this feeling that I get all the time when you're walking in and out of these spaces and get a chance to talk to people like yourself and be surrounded by this," he says.

He adds, "For my mom— I don't have any kids, but I would imagine you would want to share a part of your children's life, and I like to be able to do that."
