Nicole Brydon Bloom says Paradise season 2 feels like a new show with fresh characters and settings

Shailene Woodley and Thomas Doherty join the cast, adding depth to the story outside the bunker

Bloom teases intense dynamics for her character Jane, including a power shift with Sinatra in episode 3

Nicole Brydon Bloom is loving Paradise's new direction.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Bloom, who plays the sociopathic secret agent Jane, revealed that season 2 of the Hulu series almost feels like a different show. The new season kicked off with the first three episodes on Monday, Feb. 23, and two of those episodes — "Graceland" and "Mayday" — were set completely outside the bunker.

"I have to say that the new characters' peek at what happened to the people who were on the surface when everything went south is so fascinating," she tells PEOPLE.

Bloom, 31, continues, "We're just so lucky to have Thomas [Doherty] and Shailene [Woodley] joining the cast. And so I think viewers are going to be really excited to sort of have this... almost what feels like a new show, especially in the first two episodes, tethered, of course, to Sterling [K. Brown] and the bunker."

Season 2 introduces Annie (Woodley) and Link (Doherty), as well as several other above-ground survivors. The new characters enter the picture as Xavier's plane crashes during his search for his wife.

Bloom teases that "there's a lot of exciting stuff" ahead as the season continues, and that includes more bunker action, where a new dynamic is emerging for Jane and Sinatra (Julianne Nicholson).

The Gilded Age alum broke down the intense scene in the season's third episode, "Another Day in Paradise," where Jane visited Sinatra after shooting her in the season 1 finale. According to Bloom, both she and Nicholson asked director Ken Olin to talk them through their characters' viewpoints while filming the intense moment.

"Julianne and I had a conversation with our director for episode 3, with Ken Olin directing, because that scene where I go visit her in the hospital, we were kind of like, 'Okay, what's happening here? How do we make this make sense?' Because does Julianne, or does Sinatra really not remember? Is Jane just straight up lying and covering herself or her own motive?' "

Bloom shares, "And Ken gave us the direction of suddenly the power dynamic is unclear and Sinatra knows she's at risk with Jane."

As for Jane, her "sort of cockiness is ever-present" this season, Bloom promises, adding that her attitude in the third episode "just reveals sort of an arrogance or a narcissism, which is just yet another diagnosis for Jane."

New episodes of Paradise season 2 premiere Mondays on Hulu through March 30.
