Rock Legend’s Son, 53, Channels His Father in Emotional Live Performance: 'What a Voice'

Devon Allman, 53, the son of late rock great Gregg Allman, is every bit his father’s son. Fans were completely awed by the younger Allman’s talent, which is so similar in style and tone to his father’s bluesy Southern rock influence that they were sure they were seeing double.

At a recent live performance, Devon Allman treated music lovers to The Allman Brothers Band’s 1972 hit ā€œMelissa.ā€ On stage, Devon eerily resembles his dad, down to the long blonde hair so strongly associated with Gregg Allman.

Listening to Devon’s performance with eyes closed easily takes you back to the early ’70s. His vocal tone and soulful guitar phrasing conjure classic rock notes synonymous with The Allman Brothers Band.

Without the risk of appearing like a Gregg Allman tribute act, Devon Allman relies more on his own skills as a musician and vocalist while still giving a nod to his father—arguably one of the greatest voices in classic rock. With a look and sound so similar to his father, it would be hard for Devon to avoid comparisons. Instead, he embraces his father’s style while completely making it his own.

This is talent recognizing talent, and what a loving and emotional tribute it is.

ā€œLooks just like his dad!ā€ gushed one fan. Another added, ā€œLove this song.. long live Gregg Allman’s spirit.ā€

While being the child of a legend as iconic as Gregg Allman might cause fans to scrutinize even harder, these music fans are completely celebratory of Devon’s take on ā€œMelissa,ā€ as shown by the supportive comments flooding social media.

ā€œDevon is making it on his talent and not the famous name,ā€ wrote one fan, echoing the sentiments of many.

Devon Allman’s Career and Musical Legacy

An American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer known for blending Southern rock, blues, soul, and Americana into a modern sound, Devon Allman continues to embrace his family’s musical legacy while building a successful career through solo projects and collaborations.

Over the years, Devon Allman has released multiple albums and toured extensively, earning praise for his soulful vocals, expressive guitar playing, and roots-driven songwriting. The son of Gregg Allman’s first wife, Shelby Blackburn, Devon Allman didn’t learn about his famous father until later in his childhood.

The Legacy of Gregg Allman Lives On

Despite the early distance, Devon eventually developed a relationship with his father and continues to embrace the musical influences that naturally connect them.

Though Gregg Allman died in 2017 at the age of 69 from complications of liver cancer, his legacy continues to live on through his timeless music and his son’s celebration of his blues-rock style.
