However, McIlroy must still follow strict guidelines for wearing the jacket set by the Augusta National Golf Club, like not being photographed with alcohol while wearing it and getting approval from the club
"There's do's and don't's with it," McIlroy said while explaining the rules during a podcast appearance in January
Rory McIlroy showed off his coveted green Masters jacket while making an appearance at Wimbledon with his wife, Erica Stoll.
On Wednesday, July 1, McIlroy was seen sporting the iconic green jacket as he and Erica were joined by some of his Ryder Cup teammates to watch Jannik Sinner's second-round triumph over Nuno Borges in London.
McIlroy, 37, smiled in a photo alongside Luke Donald and Thomas Bjorn, as seen in a post on Ryder Cup Europe's Instagram account. According to the Golf Channel, Sinner, 24, greeted McIlroy and the athletes shared a conversation at the match.
Although McIlroy donned his Masters jacket on Wednesday, the Northern Irishman isn't allowed to wear it whenever he pleases.
In January, the reigning Masters champion revealed on the Stick to Football podcast that he isn't free to wear golf's most prestigious garment wherever he likes, and the rest of the outfit needs to align with certain guidelines. “There's do's and don'ts with it,” said McIlroy, who won the Masters in April and in 2025. “You have to wear a certain shirt, a club tie, and certain trousers… only dress shoes, you can't wear trainers.”

Asked where he keeps it, McIlroy said, “Just in my wardrobe," and added it's only in his possession temporarily. “You've gotta bring it back,” McIlroy said. “The only person that's allowed to bring the green jacket off the premises is the champion for a year. It then stays in the club, it stays in your locker.”

McIlroy also said he's required to sign a legal document before taking the piece off-site.
Others have mentioned the strict rules regarding the iconic jacket over the years. Golf account @makeshiftgolf noted in a podcast video that the jacket can't make a public appearance without approval from Augusta National, and the person wearing it cannot be photographed holding alcohol at any point.
“You can't be photographed with the jacket while having alcohol,” one of the account's creators, Zach Misischia, said in the clip. “You can't have a beer, you can't have a mixed drink, you can't have anything if you're drinking alcohol.”

Jon Rahm, who won the Masters in 2023, said, “There's a dress code that comes with it,” during an appearance on GOLF's Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz on GOLF's Subpar Podcast. “You learn about this quickly when you have to sign documents and things about what you are doing. Obviously, we all know the rules around Augusta National, right? And they tell you you are representing Augusta National and the jacket is Augusta National.”
Rahm said the guidelines are "complicated," and echoed the rule that the jacket "can't make a public appearance without [the club] knowing." He said, "They don't like to be surprised so they need to give approval for everything. I can't be photographed with the jacket and having alcohol. It just goes on and on.”
