Selena Gomez says she has stopped vaping nicotine and is finding it difficult to stay away from the habit she believes changed her voice.
The 34-year-old singer and actress opened up in an Instagram Stories video on Sunday, October 18.
She said she did not expect to be able to change her voice back. Gomez did not share a medical assessment confirming the cause or permanence of that change.
The Only Murders in the Building star also laughed as she addressed people who dislike how she sounds, telling them she understood and that they could simply stop listening.
Gomez Warns Fans Against Vaping and Talks About Quitting
āI vaped nicotine a lot,ā Gomez said in the video, reported by PEOPLE.
As Entertainment Weekly reported, she also urged followers to avoid taking up vaping. Gomez expressed regret about the habit and made clear that she didn't consider it worth starting.
Gomez said she was excited to have stopped, adding, āI just hope I can keep it up.ā
She also reassured followers facing their own struggles that they could get through them. Gomez did not give a quit date or describe what support, if any, she was using to help her stop.
Us Weekly noted that she had previously been photographed with a vaping device in Rome in August 2018. The outlet also pointed to later glimpses of devices while she prepared for her wedding to Benny Blanco and an outing with Taylor Swift.

According to Smokefree.gov, nicotine is addictive, and stopping vaping can bring withdrawal symptoms, including cravings, irritability and difficulty concentrating.
Her Earlier Voice Explanation Involved Throat Swelling
During an Instagram Live on December 16, 2025, a viewer asked Gomez about the way her voice had changed.
She acknowledged receiving the question several times, began an explanation and then stopped herself.
āMy throat kind of swells inside sometimes,ā she said, according to PEOPLE.
Gomez did not identify a cause for the swelling in that exchange. She thanked viewers for speaking honestly with her and indicated that she didn't feel a need to defend the way she sounded.
Gomez Has Also Addressed Comparisons With Her Younger Self
In a separate PEOPLE cover interview in September, Gomez discussed the attention paid to changes in her appearance.
She said people frequently compared her with photographs from 2016. Gomez felt those comparisons left little room for her to grow older.
She welcomed aging and accepted that her appearance would continue changing.
āI think people always want me to look the way I did, and thatās just not going to happen,ā she said.
