Josh Hutcherson found himself answering for a throwaway Taylor Swift line months later. A playful promo clip had taken off online. The actor’s chat with Jordan Firstman resurfaced during the “I Love LA” rollout. Soon, Hutcherson’s Swiftie comment became the part people fixated on.

A later GQ interview showed how that moment landed on him. Hutcherson said the reaction brought real heat online. It also explained why the former “Hunger Games” star kept his distance from internet culture.

Josh Hutcherson reflects on backlash over his Taylor Swift comments

According to the i-D TikTok dated December 9, 2025, Josh Hutcherson and Jordan Firstman played “camera roll roulette.” While promoting “I Love LA,” one photo brought up a concert memory. Hutcherson said it was “really me and my mom at a Taylor Swift show.” Firstman replied, “That is really cute,” before asking, “Are you a Swifty?” Hutcherson answered, “I’m not a Swifty. Very much not.” He then added, “No shade, all respect, but definitely not a Swifty.” Firstman joked, “A little tiny shade.” Hutcherson laughed and echoed, “Little tiny shade.”

Later, in a GQ interview published April 20, 2026, Josh Hutcherson said that the short exchange caused backlash. “I got some heat,” he said, while discussing the photo shoot with Firstman. He said the response quickly turned vicious online. People suddenly jumped to, “F*ck him! He’s a monster! Destroy him!” Swifties on the internet also bodyshamed the actor by saying, as per Josh, “He’s short! He hates her because he’s short!” Hutcherson then clarified the point behind his Taylor Swift remarks. He stressed it was not meant as a critique. “I think she’s great,” he said. “Her music is not my kind of music.” Hutcherson also said simple, honest opinions about music were not allowed online.

Meanwhile, the same GQ feature connected that backlash to his larger discomfort with online attention. The “Five Nights at Freddy’s” star said being back on TikTok made him feel “very exposed.” He added, “I started to get a lot of anxiety about it.” That detail mattered because “I Love LA” sat inside influencer culture and internet chaos. Hutcherson played Dylan, the grounded boyfriend, inside that world. So, Josh Hutcherson’s Swiftie comment ended up proving his larger point. One casual opinion became a pile-on, and he said that was exactly why he stayed offline.
