Former NBA champion J.R. Smith has been arrested on an assault charge.
According to Hunt County arrest records, the 41-year-old former basketball player, whose full name is Joseph Earl Smith, was arrested on Tuesday, Sept. 29 in Texas. Records obtained by PEOPLE show he was booked on a charge of assault causing bodily injury family violence.
No bond has been set, and Smith is still in custody at the Hunt County Detention Center, records show.

Smith won two NBA championships playing alongside LeBron James. The first was in 2016 with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and again in 2020 with the Los Angeles Lakers. Smith retired following the 2020 season.
Smith previously faced legal trouble in 2009 when he was behind the wheel during a car accident that killed his friend. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail, according to Yahoo Sports.
In 2020, Smith was seen beating up a man in Los Angeles, punching and kicking the unidentified individual as he lay on the ground in a residential neighborhood, according to a video shared by TMZ Sports.

Following the dispute, Smith spoke to TMZ and claimed his actions were the result of the man damaging his truck’s windows. The outlet reported the incident occurred near the looted Flight Club sneaker shop.

“I chased him down and whooped his ass,” Smith said at the time. “He broke my window. This ain’t no hate crime. I ain’t got no problem with nobody, nobody ain’t got no problem with me.”
In 2021, Smith enrolled at North Carolina AT&T State University. He graduated with a degree in Liberal Studies-Applied Cultural Thought in May.
A rep for Smith did not immediately return PEOPLE’s request for comment on Tuesday.
