Ty Pennington reveals season 5 of Battle on the Beach was filled with daily crises and emotional challenges
New mentors Sarah Baeumler and Mika Kleinschmidt join the show, bringing fresh perspectives and support to the competition
Contestants face high stakes as they renovate rental homes under tight deadlines with $100,000 budgets
There was no shortage of drama on season 5 of Battle on the Beach, at least according to returning mentor Ty Pennington.
"No joke, there was a crisis every day," Pennington, 61, tells PEOPLE while promoting the new season alongside the show's newest mentors, Sarah Baeumler (Renovation Island) and Mika Kleinschmidt (100 Day Dream Home). The longtime HGTV star adds, "you couldn't have really cast any better personalities for the stress that this season was."
"We all had to scramble to figure out how we can not only be a mentor and be someone's experience in design, but also be a mental therapist to help people through this?" Pennington says.
As seen in PEOPLE's exclusive first-look at the extended trailer (above), the new season sees three teams of two up-and-coming renovators attempt to increase the rental value and appeal of derelict beachfront vacation properties in hopes of winning a cash prize of $50,000. Over the course of seven weeks, the pairs have $100,000 to tackle all the updates while being guided through the challenges by their mentors.

In addition to Kleinschmidt, 44, and Baeumler, 48, who switches over to being a mentor after several seasons of judging, the new season welcomes Renovation Aloha's Tristyn and Kamohai Kalama as the main scrutinizers of the weekly makeovers.
Also teased in the trailer are the social and relationship dynamics between the three teams — Steven and Angelina Jacobs; Anna and Josiah Julian; as well as Michelle Mueller and Sydney Lorence — as the drama takes over and the tears start flowing.

When it comes to the mother-daughter duo, Mueller and Lorence, who were mentored by Pennington, he says they had "breakdowns from day one." He also teases that all the pairs had moments of "crushing defeat and feeling just completely like you've lost everything."
That intensity even spilled over to the mentors, with Baeumler admitting that she was surprised by "the work that they would do and how much effort went into" the transformations, while Kleinschmidt says that she occasionally had to lean on her fellow HGTV stars for support.

"I would normally go to [my husband] Brian if I'm feeling upset or I had an emotional breakdown day, but I knew I could go to Ty and Sarah, and they would have my back, and they would talk me through it the same way Brian would," she explains, noting that she was exploring "uncharted territories" while working on the show solo without her husband.
Explaining what makes Battle on the Beach such a wild ride — and raises the stakes for everyone involved — is the fact that "these are rental homes that literally have to open their doors to the public basically as soon as we're done," Pennington explains. "The vacationers have already arrived. So whatever decisions are made, they have to be good decisions, because somebody is booking this place."
There's no room for second-guessing. "It's an emotional rollercoaster," Pennington says. Everyone has to make "design decisions that you have to believe in."
Battle on the Beach season 5 premieres June 1 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. New episodes air Mondays and are available to stream the next day on HBO Max.
