New reports indicate that eight U.S. Marines were injured two weeks ago after an Iranian cruise missile attacked a ship they were on.
The ship was transversing the Strait of Hormuz when the attack occured on Sept. 14, according to three U.S. officials familiar with the matter.
The Marines weren't seriously injured, sustaining injuries of smoke inhalation and potential traumatic brain injuries due to concussion symptoms being noted, according to reports from NBC.

All eight Marines returned to duty soon after the attack, according to the U.S. officials. The group, consisting of seven enlisted and one officer, was operating as part of a battalion landing team.
The injured Marines add to the growing number of service members injured in connection with the now seven-month-long Iran war.
NBC reports that the Defense Department did not share any news of any Sept. 14 attacks on U.S. forces in the region.

Just this week, the Pentagon its public count of troops wounded in the war to 37, without any explanation from the Defense Department, the Washington Post reports.
As of Wednesday, the total number of troops wounded during the Iran war is 861, according to the Defense Casualty Analysis System.
The DCAS added the eight Marines to the list of injured troops assigned to Overseas Operations nearly 10 days after the attack, on Wednesday, according to NBC.

One of the U.S. official sources explained to the news outlet that there can be an occasional lag in injury reports because symptoms may not always be reported immediately, and the system isn't in real time.
More than half of the injured 861 troops were categorized as being injured in "Overseas Operations" since the start of the fragile July ceasefire between Washington and Tehran that later disintegrated.
Prior to that, killed and wounded military forces were categorized under "Operation Epic Fury," the Trump administration's name for the Iran war.
