Williams' work is also what led him to connect with Gabbard.

According to The New York Times, the pair, who had been "acquainted for some time," got to know each other in 2012 when he volunteered on the shoots for Gabbard's campaign advertisements, she told the outlet. (She had been running for U.S. Congress at the time.)

"About a year and a half later, he asked me out for the first time at a birthday party that a mutual friend of ours threw for me," she wrote over email. "As we got to know each other, we realized how much we actually had in common."

Gabbard wrote that their friendship and relationship grew over their "mutual love for the ocean and surfing."

Williams asked Gabbard to marry him while on a surfboard, the politician told The New York Times.

“I was home from D.C., and the day before Thanksgiving, he mentioned he wanted to go for a sunset surf on the South Shore that night," she told the outlet. "I was in meetings all day, and by the time we left, the sun was starting to set. We got stuck in traffic at a really long red light, and he was getting so frustrated. I couldn't understand what the big deal was."

As they paddled out just before the sun fully set, Williams pulled out a ring and asked her to marry him.

They've been married for over a decade

Gabbard and Williams got married in a Vedic ceremony in Hawaii in April 2015, per The New York Times.

"It was a deeply spiritual, traditional ceremony that held great meaning for Abraham and I," Gabbard told PEOPLE the morning after the wedding. "It brought all the important elements of our life together."
